Keto coffee is quite a bit healthier than your average breakfast, and it has the calories to match. Commonly used in intermittent fasting, keto butter coffee gives plenty of energy and a great satiated feeling throughout the morning fasting hours.
Now, I want to explain this further. Drinking this coffee will break your fast from the night time, but it will ramp up your metabolism with caffeine and fats. This is to help you get through the fasting process in the 10+ hours ahead.
Personally, I drink 2 cups of this in the morning – fast all day – and eat at 9pm. If you’re only using this for breakfast, and still eating a lunch, then it’s not really intermittent fasting.

Our favorite brew is made with a pour over and goose-neck kettle. I chose the Bonavita Variable Temp Kettle because it’s on the cheaper side for the quality that you can get. If you’re a coffee lover, it’s definitely worth the splurge!
For the pour over, we have an Osaka “Lake Masu” Pour over. It’s really just for the design – I think it looks fantastic. You can easily get a cheap one here that’ll do the same exact thing though. Don’t forget that you’ll most likely need some coffee filters, too.
If you’re not a morning person and just want a quick and easy cup of coffee, you can always consider a Keurig Coffee Maker. I’ve owned numerous in the past and they’re great machines if you want convenience. It doesn’t take up much more room than a regular coffee maker and you can usually get small drawers or stands that will hold the k-cups for you. Plus, you can switch up the flavors with just about any type you want!
Even though k-cups have come a long way on consumer safety and ecological factors, you still might want to grind your own fresh coffee. Luckily, you can grab a small k-cup attachment that lets you brew any coffee you want in it. I actually recommend using freshly ground coffee as it’s healthier for you and tastes better – but I’m a huge sucker at times for the pure convenience of them.
This butter coffee recipe is a great alternative to Starbucks drinks as well.
Main Components Keto Coffee
Coconut Oil or MCT Oil – Coconut oil technically is MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) oil, well about 65-80% MCT anyway. MCT oil is just more concentrated than coconut oil, but both have been shown to aid in fat loss.
Grass Fed Butter – Cows that have a diet of fresh grass yields butter that has improved consistency and nutritional properties. The increase of fresh grass in the diet proportionally increases the amount of fat content, specifically unsaturated fats, which gives a pleasant firmness. The nutritional quality also increases, it’s loaded with Vitamin K2 and Omega 3 Fatty Acids.
Immersion Blender – Go on and try to mix this up with a fork, you’ll be sitting there for 20 minutes and having terrible results. Oil doesn’t mix with water unless you give it some help. You need a blender to be able to force these 2 liquids together, giving you a finished look like a latte – foamy on the top.
Benefits of Butter Coffee
Fat Loss. Plain and simple, the consumption of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) has been shown to lead to greater losses in adipose tissue (fat tissue), in both animals and humans. If you’re looking for an easy, in-depth approach for the ketogenic diet, consider following The Keto Academy!
Eating Fat? Do I even need to explain this one? Eating fat has been shown to lead to greater amounts of energy, more efficient energy usage, and more effective weight loss.
More Energy. Studies have shown that the rapid rate of oxidation in MCFAs (Medium Chain Fatty Acids) leads to an increase in energy expenditure. Primarily, MCFAs are converted into ketones (our best friends), are absorbed differently in the body compared to regular oils, and give us more overall energy.
Heart Attacks? The myth that saturated fat increases the chance of Coronary Heart Disease has been debunked over and over. Recent studies show that saturated fats can actually have a positive effect on your overall heart health.
The Preparation
- 2 cups coffee
- 2 tablespoons grass fed unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons good quality MCT Oil (or coconut oil)
- 1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream (Optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (Optional)
*It’s a simple recipe, but don’t let that fool you. It tastes great, fuels you during the day, and has tons of additional health benefits. If you want to make it 0 net carbs, simply opt out of using the vanilla and heavy cream!
*Ketoproof coffee goes by a lot of names but it is originally adapted from Tibetan and Ethiopian butter coffees that hundreds of years old. Keep in mind that the name has become mainstreamed and is used to describe any cup of coffee with fat in it.
The Execution
1. Brew 2 cups worth of coffee into a large container using your favorite method. Try to choose something large enough (like a measuring jug) to eliminate spilling when we blend it.

2. If you’re using a pour over method, my recommendation is to grind to the size of kosher salt (or a bit smaller). Fill your coffee filter and wet the coffee with a little bit of water, allowing around 30 seconds for it to “bloom”. Then brew normally by pouring the water in a circular motion, carefully making sure the coffee isn’t swimming in water.

3. Grab your butter, MCT oil (or coconut oil), and immersion blender. You can mix this in a regular blender if you want to, but I feel like it’s more hassle than it’s worth to clean in a normal blender.

4. Cut off 2 Tbsp. of grass fed butter. I’m surprised at how few people use the packages markings – just cut into it, they work! I personally prefer salted butter, but many don’t. Feel free to start with unsalted first to test it out.

5. Drop in the butter, add 1 tsp. of vanilla extract, and plunk in the 2 Tbsp. coconut oil (or MCT oil if you’re using it) as well.

6. Last but not least, the 1 Tbsp. of Heavy Cream. This adds a great creaminess to the coffee for a silky texture.

7. Mix it all together with your immersion blender. Usually between 45-60 seconds gets a great frothy cap on the top. Make sure to move the immersion blender up and down to emulsify all of the fat into the coffee. This also aerates the mixture some, adding additional froth. Note: You can do all of this with a normal blender bottle and a blender ball – but the fats won’t be as emulsified, so you may need to shake every few minutes.

8. Watch out when you’re pouring with the froth on top (it can drip down the side), but your ketoproof coffee is finished! Measure it out into your favorite mug and drink away.

I personally drink both of the cups I make, but if you were to drink 1 cup of KPC it would come out to: 260 Calories, 27.7g Fats, 1.05g Net Carbs, and 1.08g Protein.

Had my first BPC today. Using coconut oil till I get my MCT in the mail. Is this good for an Atkins diet? I still eat after drinking the coffee. Started Atkins August 8, and lost 10-12 lbs. Any suggestions? Want to lose about 20 lbs yet. Weight 166 lbs and am 5 ft 4 inches.
Donna Jean Messner
Hey Donna,
Try dialing down into your macros more. Atkins tends to not care about the protein amount you have, but on keto you have to care. There’s a calculator on the site to help you figure out how much you need to eat (and of what) to lose weight. Hope that helps.
Not sure if this has been asked, sorry if it has….
Is there a reason for 2 TBS each of butter and oil? Or can it be adjusted to preference of taste? Wanted to check if there were certain health benefits to the measurements before changing them. Thanks!! 🙂
Hey Jody,
It’s because I make 2 servings in the recipe (although when I drank a lot of BPC, I would drink 2 servings at a time). That’s really the only reason. The health benefits are highlighted at the top of the recipe – and I do suggest using both butter/coconut oil (or mct oil), but the oil ratios is up to you at the end of the day.
Thank you for the great idea! I have been drinking this every morning for two weeks and I feel it has helped with my ketogenic diet. I feel quite full all morning and have actually reduced my calorie intake a lot, even with the added fats.
I modified is as a vegan to make it without the butter and substituted unsweetened almond milk. It loses some of the fat and calories but I decided to just make a little more – the coconut oil and almond milk is still quite creamy and rich.
I was getting tired of cleaning my French press every morning so I even bought a Keurig Mini because of your post!
You’re very welcome CB. I’m glad to hearing it’s working so well for you! I totally get using a French press every morning…my Keurig saves me a lot of time in the morning haha.
My fat level is 40%. I have a lipoma in my spinal cord. I have to lose abt 8kg. Is it safe to take this bpc.
Nafisah, since you have a medical condition, I’d rather you talk to your doctor before doing anything different with your diet.
when I read this recipe it sounded a little gross, not gonna lie… but I’m surprised by how much I actually LIKE it!! I did not use vanilla extract but instead used vanilla agave syrup, which upped total carbs to 6, probably won’t do that all the time. I will not miss my old sugary coffee one bit now, thanks for all you do…
Heh, it seems like a lot of people get grossed out by it. But we have to remember that butter is made with cream, and cream is put into coffee on a daily basis by millions. I’d suggest grabbing some stevia (they also sell flavored stevia drops) and adding that in instead of the agave. That will cut down on carbs tremendously and still give a nice flavor that you want. You can add the vanilla, but that’s totally optional. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
I like the idea of BPC but how can I do this without the coffee? It’s a childhood thing, I can’t stand the smell. Currently I put coconut oil in my green tea but that doesn’t get me the high fat ratios.
You can do exactly this but use tea instead of coffee 🙂
What do you classify as “one cup” of coffee? Is it just an actual cup (8 ounces), or I know some people say a cup is 6 ounces, and some say more. Right now I drink the highest setting on my Keurig every morning..I think it mght be 12 ounces? or 10.
I believe it’s 6 oz, 8 oz, and 10 oz for the different settings on the machine. Usually I’lll do either 8oz or 10oz, depending on my mood. Usually mugs will call for 8oz, as that’s the average size of a mug – but I don’t believe that 2 10oz. coffee’s is that bad. Once you start getting into the 25+ oz coffee range, then you can start seeing the health benefits of coffee deteriorate.
Can the dairy challenged use coconut cream instead of heavy cream in this recipe?
Yes, of course you could. Or you could skip the heavy cream all-together and use ghee instead of butter (since you are dairy challenged).
If you are concerned at all about your health, stop with the Keurig k cups! Not only are they terrible for the environment, you are heating water in plastic and then having the hot water squirt through plastic. Hot water should never come into contact with plastic because it will leach plastic toxins into the water. There are several comments on Coffee Detective and other sites from people complaining about stomach pains, just google them. You can buy a $10 ceramic filter holder on Amazon (or $20 at Starbucks), make your coffee over a cup or large jar, use a stick blender or regular blender to make your bulletproof coffee, and enjoy a toxin free cup of health giving coffee instead of a cesspool of toxins. Sorry to be a downer but think about it!
Hi Monroe,
I do pour over sometimes, but when I am in a pinch I will use K-cups. Recently I switched over to Eco cups, though, as they don’t have any of the plastic on the bottom – so the water doesn’t run through the plastic. Maybe you can check them out 🙂
Plastic also causes synthetic estrogen in your product. This has led to a decrease in fertility or estrogen dominance. I lowered my estrogen below normal by eliminating all plastic, soy, and black cohosh and evening primrose oil.
interested in seeing the studies supporting these claims!
I’ve seen them, and “aa” is correct, they’re known as “xenoestrogens” and are causing MAJOR health problems around the country now. Pick up any book on hormones, love the Suzanne Somers ones, and you’ll learn all about it!
I never use those.
What about using a French Press? I always see the oils floating to the top when I use mine…also tends to be richer in flavor and full-bodied.
I totally concur with your statements here. Plastic is bad for us and the environment, avoid whenever possible!
Yesterday someone told me about this ketogenic diet…just reading about it now. From what you said about using K-cups because of the plastic being harmful (which I think is something that we all know, or should, know) …wouldn’t brewing from a regular coffee maker be just as harmful? After all, the hot water goes through plastic as well.
I make this with a scoop of vanilla wheybolic protein and some ice and it tastes just like a frappé! Super yum! I am working on using this to IF, but am finding it hard to last past 3 in the afternoon. Does this mean I am not keto adapted? I will confess that I really do not want to buy a blood ketone reader due to the expense (I might try to get a breath ketone detector in the future). I have been keto for 6 weeks and really just started tracking my macros and trying to create a calorie deficit, but have been struggling with hunger. IFing would help me keep my calories low, surely, if I could turn off the hunger.
Some people just can’t do IF. It’s better to not do it if you find yourself struggling. Your vanilla frappe BP coffee sounds delicious, though! 🙂
If you’re having trouble with hungry, try to up your fats some. If they’re on par, then take a look at your thyroid. Other options is eating too late in the night before you sleep which can cause increased hunger the next day.
Hi! I’ve been doing my homework on ketogenic dieting lately, and this BPC interests me. The only question I have is, would you drink something like this on a daily basis? For example, substitute the BPC for a normal breakfast, and have lunch and dinner as normal? Thanks so much for all the great resources on your website!
Emily,
It really depends on what you’re eating the rest of the day. Typically BPC doesn’t hold tons of micronutrients in it, so if you’re not filling in the gaps elsewhere, you may want to re-consider drinking it daily. You could also supplement the coffee for bone broth if you want to drink it daily. Hope that helps!

Tried the BPC recipe this morning using my French Coffee Press and it’s delicious. I love the taste of the vanilla. Thank you!
Is there anything I can use instead of coconut oil? (I’m allergic to all things coconut).
I’ve done keto before and recently started after I had fallen off the wagon a couple months back. I couldn’t remember the exact ratio for bulletproof coffee so I googled it and found this link:
https://authoritynutrition.com/3-reasons-why-bulletproof-coffee-is-a-bad-idea/
I was wondering what you’re thoughts on it were. I’m a huge fan of your site and thought you would have better insight into it than I would. Thanks!
I find that eating foods with micronutrients definitely helps. You should be getting enough micronutrients elsewhere in your diet to warrant bulletproof coffee, I find.

You have salted butter in the photo. Yes, I noticed.
I’ve been drinking my coffee like this for a couple of months now and love it. I don’t add the butter though and instead of vanilla, I add a dash of cinnamon and a quarter tsp of unsweetened baking cocoa. I also add in a tbsp of unflavored fiber powder. I mix everything except the cream and oil together in the cup, brew the coffee directly into the cup and mix that up. I mix the cream and oil in a small bowl, toss it in the microwave for about 5 seconds then use my frother to beat it up a bit. It makes it super foamy and awesome. I then slowly pour it over the top of the cup of coffee and there’s my own little latte!
Hi guys, I couldn’t fin d a “Magic Bullet” blender (Which is where the term “Magic Bullet Coffee” really comes from!), so I just use a thick Tupperware container, add the ingredients and shake it like a cocktail. Much easier than using a blender and no messy cleaning afterwards. Makes a nice froth also.
was looking for a BPC recipe and came across this one amazing just at this moment finished drinking it and loved it Thankyou for the recipe 🙂
Hey E.G. – thanks so much for the compliments on the site. I was eating a large meal (2-3x 1 meal in a 3-4 hour window) back when I wrote this article. After a few months my stomach starting giving me pains so I stopped fasting. I now just eat 2-3 meals a day. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I kind of got overwhelmed with e-mails and let the comments build up.
Fasting in general is more of a convenience thing, but there are a few health benefits – but if it’s something that you’re not just doing for convenience, there’s not a huge point in it.
Hi Craig! At the moment I don’t have any unsalted butter and I don’t want to make a trip to the store yet…is it possible to replace the butter with half and half? Or is there any reason I shouldn’t? 3 tbsp of half and half plus 2 tbsp of coconut oil comes out to about the same fat/calories for one cup.
Hey Jennifer. You could replace the butter with some heavy cream if you have that, but half and half is a quite a bit less fat. You could alternatively use the salted butter and add a bit of sweetener (preferably stevia) at the end. I do that from time to time and have no problem with it.
Can someone troubleshoot my BP coffee please? I’m using the BP ground coffee, Brain Octane, and ghee. I brew the coffee, add the tablespoon of oil and between 1-2 tablespoons of ghee, then blend with an immersion blender. It froths up in the blender but as soon as I put it into a mug it separates and does not stay frothy! Is it the ghee? I’m doing a Whole30 and don’t want to use butter because I have the ghee, although I know I can make my own clarified butter. I don’t know what else the problem is. 🙁
It’s possible that it’s the ghee, though I have used coconut oil + MCT Oil before and had no problem with it. Are you giving it enough time in the immersion blender? Occasionally you’ll see a small “glaze” of oil over the top if you let it sit for a while, but if you drink it while it’s warm, it should be emulsified well.
A little cinnamon on top is super good.
Definitely is! I also add allspice sometimes just to keep things interesting.
I’m brand new to this …and need to lose about 40 lbs.- normally drink black coffee – and I understand this more than just coffee …it seems so calorie dense, my macros say I should consume about 1380 cals a day based on a 25% deficit …so I’m kinda afraid of this as it would be a big chunk of my daily allowance …I have been doing IF for about 3.5 weeks (not keto – just started looking into keto) and about 1200 cals a day …getting no where – hence I am gonna try the keto diet along with IF. I am struggling with hunger many days but my energy level has been fine.
It may be worth doing a slightly lower calorie deficit and allowing yourself slightly more calories. Though you can always half this recipe and it is still got some great fat numbers to help you meet your macros. If you’re not seeing much result with IF it may be worth going back to having normal, larger meals.
btw …I did change that profile pic (tee he) …I made one cuppa without the butter …I am 3 days into the keto WOE …still doing IF for now although I expanded my window by 1 hour which has made a hug difference in my hunger – well, the keto too I’m sure is helping…and am actually down 6 pounds altogether so far ( seems like all of a sudden) so gonna stick with the IF for now & keto def seems to be helping. I love your blog & all the support here …thanks for all you do – gonna pick up some of your cookbooks
hey there! I was wondering instead of adding the heavy cream can one add almond milk instead? I made my BPC with 2 tbsp coconut oil, 1 tbsp regular salted butter, a pinch of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of stevia/erythritol powder, 1.5 tbsp instant coffee, 100 ml of unsweetened almond milk topped with hot water and blended..my fitness pal showed up these macros when i entered it in (200 ml approx serving)-
cals- 388
fat-41.1 g
net carbs- 4.5 g
protein- 0.9 g
It tastes soooooo good! but i want to know if its legit keto 🙂
thanks 🙂
Good morning, I am wondering if I were just to take 2-4 tbsp of MCT oil in the morning, will it have the same affect as if I were to make BPC? Or do I need the butter and coconut oil also?
Thank you
Hi,
I never really thought of just having bulletproof coffee to hold me over during the day, but its actually a great idea, especially since I love coffee!! I find it so annoying to have to prepare all my food in the morning for work. I guess I do my own version of BPC…. I use coffee, coconut oil, and almond milk. I guess I’m just wondering if doing that is as good as the recipe you’ve given here… I know it’s not as much fat, but for the purpose of it, does it still work?
The butter will help with the creaminess of the coffee and will also help the emulsion process a little bit – but if you want to do 2 tbsp. MCT Oil by all means you can do that.
For the purposes, sure. I’d recommend tossing a pad of butter in there too; it’s similar to if you’d add heavy whipping cream – it gives it a great creamy texture.
For the first time ever, I actually met my macros today! Perfectly! I’m down 33 pounds as of today…So, here is my question. Is there a “sneaky” way to IF, like stopping eating at 4:00 pm, then starting back up 16 to 18 hours later?
Sorry for the late reply here. Yeah of course you can do that. As long as you have a large window, it’s still considered IF. Though, I’d only suggest IF if it’s for convenience. Congratulations on the weight loss!
I tried this today for the first time. HOLY COW, it was good.
I have a question though – at the grocery store I went to today (not my usual one) they had Kerrygold, but it was in sort of a tub like margarine. When I opened it, it was covered with a peel-off cardboard and it was VERY VERY soft, like it had been sitting on my counter for hours, softening. It was on the same shelf as the “soft butter” – one of the store brands said “light”, so I knew those weren’t the “real thing”. I tasted it and I honestly cannot tell if it’s real butter or not. Recently I got the kerrygold that is pictured in your steps above, and it seemed to taste different, if I remember right. This package says “Naturally Softer”, “Pure Irish Butter”, and the ingredients are pasteurized cream and salt. And it has the consistency of margarine. The nutrition info is the same as butter. But it seems more yellow in color and a darker yellow than the typical butter stick when it melted in my coffee. Am I that skeptical?
Really happy to hear! I believe that butter is whipped, so it may have a different taste to it. I’d definitely suggest just buying the “bars” of butter rather than the tubs. You can certainly taste a difference (you’re not paranoid), so don’t panic 🙂

almond milk has 1/2 the calories of skim milk..
Hi! I prefer iced coffee usually, can this be served cold with the oils in it?
It usually congeals at the top if you make it into iced coffee. It may be best to stick with heavy cream only for iced coffee and make this on the days that you want something warm/hot.
I recommend not using milk at all. Cream would be a better option.
Hey Craig! I start my IF in 4 days. I have to admit, I’m a little nervous. lol I don’t know why, I guess because I want it to be a success, and I’ve never tried it before. I am definitely using this recipe! I’ve done my old version of BPC, but never with this amount of fat, so I’m excited to try.
How long does the fast have to be? 12 hours? I will drink this between 6 and 7 am, but I usually do my workout (one hour strength or 60-70 min run) at 4:00 pm. I am worried about dragging in my workout. I’ve been trying to eat a fat bomb around 3:30, so I’m energized. I’m guessing that is not long enough for the fast? Any recommendations or thoughts on what to expect?
I think it’s awesome when I read through your comments and you respond to everyone! Thank you for that!
Tara
Sounds like a yummy recipe.
Thank you Dan!
Hey Tara – yep, it’s a minimum of 12 hours. You don’t HAVE to fast, though. You could always split the meals up into regular 3 per day meals if you prefer to do it this way.
I’m new to keto diet (only a week). I’m wondering about the 1 carb in whip cream. I’m drinking 1.7l decaf coffee a day and used to use 10% Half & Half coffee milk, but I used 2-3 tbsp in each mug (5 x day). I was wondering if 35% whip cream would be better? I would not need as much, but it has a lot more calories. Any thoughts?
The calories are from fat with cream so you shouldn’t have a problem. If you buy organic cream it should help out a lot too, being closer to 0g carbs. Definitely switch over to cream as it will reduce the carb counts much more than half/half.
Thanks, Craig! I’ll need to find organic whip cream then. I’ve also decided to make my decaf coffee weaker so I’ll only need 1tbsp per mug, which would make it 5 carbs per day. I can live with that. :o)
Sounds like a solid plan!
Maybe this is a stupid question but could I use my regular blender to make this? On a low setting? Or does it have to be immersion.
By Far, this is the best drink in the morning… since we do not have grass fed butter, I use Clarified butter “Ghee” and MCT oil… been on Keto for few weeks, the only thing that I am struggling with is trying to make different meals with low protein, as I used to consumer way too much protein before and that caused high Uric Acid…
Definitely glad to hear it – it just takes practice on how to balance out the fat/protein in meals. You’ll get there 🙂
