Perfect Cup of Keto Coffee

Keto Breakfast Recipes > Keto Breakfast Recipes

Keto coffee is quite a bit healthier than your average breakfast, and it has the calories to match. Commonly used in intermittent fasting, keto butter coffee gives plenty of energy and a great satiated feeling throughout the morning fasting hours.

Now, I want to explain this further. Drinking this coffee will break your fast from the night time, but it will ramp up your metabolism with caffeine and fats. This is to help you get through the fasting process in the 10+ hours ahead.

Personally, I drink 2 cups of this in the morning – fast all day – and eat at 9pm. If you’re only using this for breakfast, and still eating a lunch, then it’s not really intermittent fasting.

supplies to make keto coffee

Our favorite brew is made with a pour over and goose-neck kettle. I chose the Bonavita Variable Temp Kettle because it’s on the cheaper side for the quality that you can get. If you’re a coffee lover, it’s definitely worth the splurge!

For the pour over, we have an Osaka “Lake Masu” Pour over. It’s really just for the design – I think it looks fantastic. You can easily get a cheap one here that’ll do the same exact thing though. Don’t forget that you’ll most likely need some coffee filters, too.

If you’re not a morning person and just want a quick and easy cup of coffee, you can always consider a Keurig Coffee Maker. I’ve owned numerous in the past and they’re great machines if you want convenience. It doesn’t take up much more room than a regular coffee maker and you can usually get small drawers or stands that will hold the k-cups for you. Plus, you can switch up the flavors with just about any type you want!

Even though k-cups have come a long way on consumer safety and ecological factors, you still might want to grind your own fresh coffee. Luckily, you can grab a small k-cup attachment that lets you brew any coffee you want in it. I actually recommend using freshly ground coffee as it’s healthier for you and tastes better – but I’m a huge sucker at times for the pure convenience of them.

This butter coffee recipe is a great alternative to Starbucks drinks as well.

Main Components Keto Coffee

Coconut Oil or MCT Oil – Coconut oil technically is MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) oil, well about 65-80% MCT anyway. MCT oil is just more concentrated than coconut oil, but both have been shown to aid in fat loss.

Grass Fed Butter – Cows that have a diet of fresh grass yields butter that has improved consistency and nutritional properties. The increase of fresh grass in the diet proportionally increases the amount of fat content, specifically unsaturated fats, which gives a pleasant firmness. The nutritional quality also increases, it’s loaded with Vitamin K2 and Omega 3 Fatty Acids.

Immersion Blender – Go on and try to mix this up with a fork, you’ll be sitting there for 20 minutes and having terrible results. Oil doesn’t mix with water unless you give it some help. You need a blender to be able to force these 2 liquids together, giving you a finished look like a latte – foamy on the top.

Benefits of Butter Coffee

Fat Loss. Plain and simple, the consumption of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) has been shown to lead to greater losses in adipose tissue (fat tissue), in both animals and humans. If you’re looking for an easy, in-depth approach for the ketogenic diet, consider following The Keto Academy!

Eating Fat? Do I even need to explain this one? Eating fat has been shown to lead to greater amounts of energy, more efficient energy usage, and more effective weight loss.

More Energy. Studies have shown that the rapid rate of oxidation in MCFAs (Medium Chain Fatty Acids) leads to an increase in energy expenditure. Primarily, MCFAs are converted into ketones (our best friends), are absorbed differently in the body compared to regular oils, and give us more overall energy.

Heart Attacks? The myth that saturated fat increases the chance of Coronary Heart Disease has been debunked over and over. Recent studies show that saturated fats can actually have a positive effect on your overall heart health.

The Preparation

  • 2 cups coffee
  • tablespoons grass fed unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons good quality MCT Oil (or coconut oil)
  • 1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream (Optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (Optional)

*It’s a simple recipe, but don’t let that fool you. It tastes great, fuels you during the day, and has tons of additional health benefits. If you want to make it 0 net carbs, simply opt out of using the vanilla and heavy cream!

*Ketoproof coffee goes by a lot of names but it is originally adapted from Tibetan and Ethiopian butter coffees that hundreds of years old. Keep in mind that the name has become mainstreamed and is used to describe any cup of coffee with fat in it.

The Execution

1. Brew 2 cups worth of coffee into a large container using your favorite method. Try to choose something large enough (like a measuring jug) to eliminate spilling when we blend it.

2. If you’re using a pour over method, my recommendation is to grind to the size of kosher salt (or a bit smaller). Fill your coffee filter and wet the coffee with a little bit of water, allowing around 30 seconds for it to “bloom”. Then brew normally by pouring the water in a circular motion, carefully making sure the coffee isn’t swimming in water.

3. Grab your butter, MCT oil (or coconut oil), and immersion blender. You can mix this in a regular blender if you want to, but I feel like it’s more hassle than it’s worth to clean in a normal blender.

4. Cut off 2 Tbsp. of grass fed butter. I’m surprised at how few people use the packages markings – just cut into it, they work! I personally prefer salted butter, but many don’t. Feel free to start with unsalted first to test it out.

5. Drop in the butter, add 1 tsp. of vanilla extract, and plunk in the 2 Tbsp. coconut oil (or MCT oil if you’re using it) as well.

6. Last but not least, the 1 Tbsp. of Heavy Cream. This adds a great creaminess to the coffee for a silky texture.

heavy cream in coffee

7. Mix it all together with your immersion blender. Usually between 45-60 seconds gets a great frothy cap on the top. Make sure to move the immersion blender up and down to emulsify all of the fat into the coffee. This also aerates the mixture some, adding additional froth. Note: You can do all of this with a normal blender bottle and a blender ball – but the fats won’t be as emulsified, so you may need to shake every few minutes.

8. Watch out when you’re pouring with the froth on top (it can drip down the side), but your ketoproof coffee is finished! Measure it out into your favorite mug and drink away.

I personally drink both of the cups I make, but if you were to drink 1 cup of KPC it would come out to: 260 Calories, 27.7g Fats, 1.05g Net Carbs, and 1.08g Protein.

  1. Awesome post, Craig!! It’s exactly what a newbie like me needs to get past the fear of BPC and give it a go – and I’m also looking forward to sharing BPC with my family over the holidays! I love that you included all the science links too, so I can educate them all once I tell them what’s in the super-special coffee I made them. 😉 Thanks!

  2. You would be surprised how delicious and satiating this is. I cannot start my day now without my BPC. I actually use one of those Magic Bullet blenders to mix mine and it does a fantastic job as well and makes clean up very easy.

  3. I wonder if this would work with my English Tea, instead of the “milk”. I’ll give it a try and let you know…

    • Megan,

Do you mean using tea instead of coffee? I’ve done it before with black tea and green tea and it’s worked just fine 🙂 Hope you enjoy – let me know how it turns out!

  4. Day two drinking this stuff! I can’t believe how delicious it is!

    • Adam,

Awesome! I started experimenting with it more and more in herbal teas and I’m starting to gain a new love for bulletproof tea. Give it a try if you’re a tea fan!

  5. I add 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa and 1 square of 90% dark chocolate (combine ingredients on stove, add to coffee and blend) for a delicious keto mocha. This is the food highlight of my day, every day. I can’t wait to get out of bed every morning just to have this drink…

    • Haha Murphy, I’m the same way. It’s morning routine now to get up and get straight to the coffee machine to get everything ready. Love the stuff – and to think I used to think the idea sounded disgusting!

  6. Could you reheat it after adding the ingredients. I am envisioning a half cold cup of coffee which is not for me. I really must try – butter in coffee? It does sound disgusting!

    • Jean,

Trust me, it’s not as bad as you imagine. After all, butter is made from cream – so it really just gives a creamy consistency to it. It actually changes color like it would if you added cream too. You can reheat it, that’s fine. The key is the make sure you blend it with a blender/hand blender to ensure all of it is mixed together well. If it’s mixed well, then you can re-heat no problem.

I guess I am weird in a way that I kind of prefer warm/cool coffee over hot coffee, so I normally let mine cool off first before I drink it 🙂

  7. I’ve been hesitant to try this but I got a Ninja blender for Christmas… Made my first cup this morning and I am very pleased. Thanks for your recipe! I will have my first cup while getting dressed and the other once I get to work.

  8. This sounds awesome! So if I wanted to do a three day fat fast would I do the 8 oz of cream cheese and the 2 cups of bpc or one cup of bpc and the 8 oz of cream cheese each day?
    Thanks!!!

    • Shannon, if you’re doing a fat fast then it would be closer to 1 cup BPC and 8 Oz. Cream Cheese. You want to be in the 1000-1100 calorie range on the fat fast. 🙂

  9. i love is BPC, at first I was really hesitate to try….butter in coffee…..hmmmmm….but it does add a creamy consistency. I will definitely try to add the unsweeten cocoa and 1 bar of 90% dark chocolate, I am a chocolate addict (haha) Ive been on this Keto diet for about a week and half and love it, but i do miss my chocolate! so definitely gonna try the chocolate. thanks again for the recipe! Im on my 2nd day of intermittent fast! great info and great website!

  10. Hey so I made my first cup of bcp but I have never been a coffee guy especially if it wasn’t on the really sweet side, what can you suggest to make sweeten this up a bit or is bcp just not for me :/

    • Liquid stevia, liquid sucralose, or erythritol would sweeten it up a bit. But if you’re not much of a coffee guy, it might just not be for you 🙁

      • A little update, so I gave it another shot I may have over done the ingredients after the coffee, so I stuck with to the recipe but I had salted butter I’m not sure how much that made a difference but when I had it, it had a sharp bad taste probably from adding to much extras. I replaced the butter with more coconut oil and after I added some almond milk to flatten? Out the flavor I enjoyed it much more than yesterday. Adding the milk shouldn’t be too bad right? Thanks Craig btw for all the recipes and stuff its helped my with my start into keto

  11. If a blender is not available, a wire whisk will do in a pinch. Put the whisk in the mug. Place the handle between your two hands – like you’re praying. Quickly roll the whisk back and forth. It also gives your arms a good work out! You won’t get as much foam, but it will emulsify the oils. There’s not as much to clean up either. I figured this out when I didn’t have a blender handy and have been using this method often.

  12. Hi! Glad I found your website, tons of GREAT info! I love making BPC, but since I didn’t have an Immersion Blender, I bought a small Ikea Frother (like $6 off Amazon). I melt a week’s worth of Coconut Oil, Butter, Heavy Whipping Cream in a saucepan until nice and smooth, then I use my frother in the sauce pan…then pour it into silicone muffin liners, freeze them, and pull out 2 in the morning, microwave them on melt, pour in my travel coffee mug, froth again, pour in about 1/2 coffee, froth a bit more, add rest of coffee, then I’m out the door! I LOVE how I am not hungry until about 12 or 12:30!

    • Awesome Lara, though I do recommend getting an immersion blender. Not only for BPC, but making sauces, grinding ingredients, whipping things up. It’s a really useful tool to have. I’ve also had one of those Frother gadgets, and I just get much more use out of my immersion blender.

Thanks for visiting the site by the way!

  13. Hey,

I’m fairly new to all, but I’ve been enjoying this coffee pretty much every day now and sometimes twice a day. Only difference I did was that I would add 1-2 scoops of Whey Isopure-No Flavor to it just because I tend to find it hard to gain all of the grams of protein I required. As far as consistency is seems to be that same, but in your opinion is that okay?

    • Ian, as long as you’re fine with the amount of calories in it (it’s not going over your macros with other meals) then it’s no big deal. I love me some protein powder, just a lot of people have sensitivities to whey/casein.

  14. So, could I actually forego a meal for BPC ? I can get breakfast down ,but lunch is hard no prob with dinner & no snacks.. Im just so full

  15. Is it possible to make this with decaffeinated coffee? I’m not a coffee drinker much and have always stayed away from caffeine, I’ve seen what caffeine addiction can do (family members can’t go a morning without it or they get headaches, jitters, etc…) so I don’t want to go down that rode. Thanks!

  16. Hi,
Had my first go at this recipe (at my wife’s prompting).

Two mugs made and consumed. Tasted good, went down well.

Excellent stuff. Thanks for the recipe.

    A

  17. Gonna try this with my fat fast. Like I mentioned before, I never have much of an appetite and generally force myself to eat. Before it was all the wrong things and that’s why I gained weight – from not eating and then eating the wrong thing. Anyway, if I’m not hungry, can I just get away with a couple of these during the day?

    • Michele, of course you can! I think as you eat more and continue, you will have more success as your metabolism will begin to repair the damage that has happened to it 🙂

  18. Had the bullet proof coffee-WoW- fantastic. I’m so glad there are people out there willing to experiment. I’ve been a low-carb eater for a while but I always seem to lose interest and get tired of all the protein I was ingesting. Even left it for the most part and went to juicing which left me with a nice 15 lb weight gain and an increasing hemoglobin A1C. Started paleo but I just wasn’t going anywhere with my weight and I wasn’t feeling that good. Now I get it- my body needs fat. It’s hard to go against the grain when you work in the medical field but this is what I need. I feel really good and I won’t be swayed from it. P.S. your cookbook rules- can’t wait to start some of those recipes.

    • Tina, that’s awesome news you’ve came back 🙂 I used to get bored also, but once you start experimenting in the kitchen you realize that you aren’t really held back like we used to think. There’s so many recipes you can do and stay in ketosis it’s crazy. Also, thanks a TON for buying the cookbook – really helps me out! Let me know whatcha think of the recipes once you get down into it and cook some!

  19. Husband and I are trying this for the first time and using a Yerba Mate tea for our base. The tea definitely could have been brewed stronger but this is still a lot more satisfying and tasty than I thought when I first read what was in it! We’re doing your free 30 day plan and starting week 2 today. With how yummy everything has been and how much we’ve been enjoying the keto lifestyle I think we’ll definitely be purchasing your cookbook. Do you know if you’ll ever have a printed copy or is it only going to be in electronic form?

    • Hey Marissa,

Really glad to hear you guys are doing well (and enjoying it, too)! How’s it been going so far with the weight loss, have you been seeing results?

The cookbook won’t be available in print form for a long time (if ever) because of the printing production costs I’d have to invest. It’s just too much money to think about for me at the minute. But, you could get the PDF version and print it at Kinkos and have it bound for around 20-30 dollars 🙂

  20. So if my fast starts at 6 pm and ends at 12 noon should this be my last meal?

  21. AndyWear says

I noticed theres no protein af all in this drink and would like some in it. I want to develop and maintain mh muscle while bejng on keto diet. What should i do?

    • Andy, you could add protein powder to get protein into it. Though protein for every meal isn’t always needed when you’re maintaining muscle. You can still eat fats and maintain muscle as long as protein comes in other meals. This is more to kickstart your metabolism at the beginning of the day and help you on your way with losing the bodyfat. Keep protein in other meals and you’d be fine.

      • Thanks for the response craig.
I would like this coffee to be a staple for me in the morning because at the moment I do drink coffee every morning mixed with protein. It’s pretty gross. lol

So what if I made this coffee, and boiled 2 eggs for the protein? I was hoping to add some protein in all 3 meals so that I can have a proper spread. I don’t know if I can eat enough protein with just 3 meals a day. And one last question. In the keto diet, so far all the menus I’ve seen, they’re all just 3 meals. Is that really all I need? Thanks!

        • Andy, there’s a number of studies that show that nutrient timing isn’t what we thought it was 10-15 years ago. You can eat all your food in 1 meal, 10 meals, or 3 meals and still be able to get the effect of your food. Though, post-workout there’s some increased nutrient uptake, it’s not significant to require constant eating. It’s really just up to you how many times you eat, you can spread out to 5-6 meals a day if you want. I think the reason that you don’t see a lot of people eating 6 times a day is just because a lot of people don’t work out. A lot of people are on this diet for weight loss (while being sedentary) and just don’t have the schedule for multiple meals.

As for the eggs, you could definitely do that. Coffee and protein might not work straight up, but some flavors would match well with coffee I’d think. Hope that helps!

  22. Hey Craig, I finally got around to making BPC and your recipe is awesome. It gets me through from the time I wake up to the time I get home from work. Just wanted to let you know I accidentally grabbed my imitation coconut extract instead of my vanilla extract, and it was a wonderful mistake. If you like coconut, substitute the vanilla for some imitation coconut. It had a fabulous flavor. And from what I can find, McCormicks imitation coconut extract has 0 everything. No carbs, no calories, nothing.

    • Awesome Katie, I’ll have to give that a try some time! Sounds delicious. Funny thing is I used to hate coconut and the taste of coconut, but not I love it 🙂

  23. I was totally surprised when I tried this. It really is yummy. I can’t drink it without sweetener though. I add one tbsp. of DaVinci sugar free vanilla syrup (made with Splenda), instead of vanilla extract. It appears to be zero carbs. Also, I usually add the one tbsp. of HWC, but today, I tried it without. It was still creamy with just the butter. Now, if I choose to cut out dairy (just a possibility), I can still drink my coffee. 🙂

    • Hey JoAnn, glad you like it! Butter is still considered dairy (since it’s made from cream) but you could make Ghee from butter and use that instead (it’s non-dairy). 🙂

  24. Craig,
I’m becoming your highest poster lol.
Anyhow I got a question. I’ve been drinking bulletproof coffee and its been giving me diahrea. I’m not too sure what’s causing it. I know I’m lactose intollerent, but I don’t believe there is lactose in heavy cream. Or am I wrong?

The difference I made to your recipe is I added pure vanilla whey protein and ceylon cinnamon. I’m using MCT oil. Also, I’m using pretty strong vietnamese coffee. I hadn’t had diahreah from my whey or protein before. Feeling really light headed in the morning. So…..am I doing something wrong?

  25. Avondarcye says

I throw mine in the vitamix with a little heavy cream and cinnamon- deish!

  26. I finally got brave enough to make BPC. I was a little scared of the coconut oil & butter, but I got over the fear and am so glad that I did!
I’ve had this every morning now for a week and a half. I have it around 5:00am, and am not hungry until around noon.
    Perfect recipe…really, really good stuff!

  27. Hi again,
How long after the BPC are we to wait to have our first meal? I would like to drop 10lbs. Also, would it help to add Great Lakes Gelatin to our coffee for protein and to keep me satisfied longer? I usually workout shortly after BPC. I do Zuzka Light, Buti and rebounding or power walking. Usually an hour or a little more. I like gelatin because it has helped with my hair and skin. I usually take a tablespoon before bed also as it helps with deeper sleep. Opinions? Thank you so much. I am purchasing your cookbook also.

    • Tracey, that depends on you. Some people fast after their BPC, some people don’t. Some people eat a meal with their BPC. It’s more about what works for you and what your macros are (how many allotted calories, fats, proteins, and carbs). If it fits in, you can do whatever you’d like 🙂

  28. What if I don’t have grass fed butter? Can I use the normal stuff?

    • Kristy, you can still use regular butter but grass fed will just offer a bit more nutrients and vitamins. Kerrygold is a widely available brand you could check out some time in the future!

  29. Hey,

At the start you mentioned drinking this coffee will break the fast from the previous evening yet from the bpc page.

they say that drinking bulletproof coffee does not break the fast? I know that your recipe is slightly different, so what ingredients in your recipe would break the fast?

    Thanks

    • Hey Quyen,

I just have a difference in opinion and have read that in-taking over 50 calories in a sitting will break a fast. I still count the calories from coconut oil, mct oil, and butter. These break the fasting state.

  30. I have no problem having BPC in the morning with a scoop of or Visalus protein powder..and lasting until dinner time. What kind of macros should I hit if I am only having 2 meals at the end of the day? How long can or should this fasting routine be maintained before reverting to multiple meals throughout the day. How frequently can the fast mode be repeated ? I am 5ft 2in and about 135 lbs. want to lose about 15 lbs

    • Deb, I fast every day but I also make sure to hit my macros at the end of the day when I eat all of my food. It’s not that I’m eating less calories – I’m eating just as many as I would if I were eating throughout the day. I just do it for the convenience and energy levels I get from it.

  31. Debi Salem says

If you drink 2 cups in the morning, then no food . Will you stay in keto all day?

    • Debi,

There’s no reason BPC would take you out of ketosis. Since coconut oil is mostly MCT oil, it oxidizes into ketones (which is unique about it). It would deepen the ketotic state, if anything.

  32. Judy Oneil says

Hi, I’m new and I want to know if I can eat Quest Bars they have 3 net carbs in them I have a lot of them. Also what about Premier Protein shake it has 3 carbs in it 30 protein 160 calorie all ready made I have 15 of them. I’m going to Costco on Friday to shop anything special I should get? I drink a lot of Iced Tea I use Now Better Stevia Liquid Extract in it. Thank you for you help!

    Always,Judy

    • Judy,

I’d suggest not eating Quest Bars – especially when you are just starting out. I’d suggest saving them for when you become fat adapted (in 4-6 weeks time). As for the protein shakes, I suggest never drinking them. They’re very high in protein and not very much fat I’d imagine. You should take your time to look up your macros using the Keto Calculator at the top of the website. This will help you understand how much you should be eating.

      Hope that helps!

  33. Hi, I’m using a nespresso machine which produces max 110ml of pure lovely tasting coffee. Being new to Keto (my 3rd week) I’m planning to add MCT oil and 2 tbls of Kerrygold to the 110ml of coffee – almost like a shot! is that going to be ok? or do you have to drink it with more coffee?, does it boil down to personal preference?

thanks for the brilliant information on here, it is precious!

    • Cliff, I saw that machine and thought it looked pretty nice. Just was a bit pricey for me considering I have one. To answer your question, it’s all about personal preference 🙂 Thanks for the kinds words!

  34. I hate coffee so I tried the tea instead and I was honestly surprised at how good it tasted. I didn’t have any cream so it was just the tea, coconut oil, butter and vanilla. I was skeptical but it won me over.

    • Gina – that’s how I feel. You can’t knock it till you try it. I also don’t use cream in mine, because butter is made from cream so it adds what you need usually. Tea, broth, coffee – doesn’t matter!

  35. Hi! Do you think this could be a good before bed snack made with decaf of course. I am finding it hard to eat my exercise calories back through the day and this could be the perfect drink to help me stay within goal.

    • It could be Tabatha, but I’d just try to eat (well, drink) a bit before bed time. Fats usually give you energy and a lot of people have trouble sleeping if they eat a lot of fats right before bed.

  36. Hi!

I’ve been drinking BCP using Land O’ Lakes unsalted butter, Kirkland Organic Coconut Oil, Golden Creme Heavy Whipping Cream, and Torani Sugar Free Vanilla Syrup…is that ok?

I also try to fast by not eating after 8pm until 12pm the next. I workout at 5am and drink BCP before I work out. I eat about 1300 – 1400 calories a day and I’m 5’1 approx. 110 lbs trying to get to 105lbs. However, I am still gaining weight slowly…Am I doing something wrong? I come very close to my macros and range from 20-25g net carbs.

    • Liana,

It sounds like you might actually not be eating enough. Try using the keto calculator to figure your macros out 🙂

      • Craig and Liana,
I have the same issue with the weight – I think its mainly in our heads 😛 I am at 102 right now and my calories are set at 1200. I really get wound up if I cross that line (trying to get to 101, started at 107 – height 5.3) and I KNOW I am being really OTT but can’t seem to control it. I am also using it to control my seizures so thats another motivator for me, regardless, taming the beast in our heads is no simple task.

Craig – I really struggle with the macros, specifically the carb/protein. I can usually get my fats to 80% (would rather they be higher) but my protein stays under. Short of seeing a nutritionist or giving up my 90% chocolate, not sure I can beat it!

        THANKS for all your help!!!!!!

        • You should be able to incorporate eggs and/or meats to get your protein up while still having a good chunk of fat on your plate. You can measure prior to cooking to make sure that your macros end up turning out what you want them to be. That would be the best bet.

Since you’re doing this for medical reasons, I would especially advise to making a meal plan for the day, or week (calculated out) so you know exactly what you’ll be doing with a plan of action!

  37. I am looking forward to trying this but I have a question. Does the coconut oil make a difference as to wether it’s hydrogenated or non???

    • You shouldn’t be eating hydrogenated oils as they’re quite unhealthy and filled with trans fats (something you want to avoid). It should be quite easy to find regular coconut oil 🙂

  38. I tried this early on in keto and found it WAY too much but now, four months in, its yummy. I do have a question though, I tried making it today using a pack of Starbucks instant Via, 1tbsp of c/oil and 1tbsp of Kerry. Added 1tbsp of HC and a dash of vanilla and it still seemed too strong, so I added another err, splash of cream (:P) I calculated the calories for one serving around 342 – sure its because I added more hc but, is it because I was coward with the other ingredients that it tasted so strong?? I also had trouble frothing it – using an older Oster free stand mixer.

    • I use a hand mixer to mix mine up – it may be time to invest in a new one! The strength in the taste of the ingredients might just be a personal thing, and you may want to look into expeller pressed coconut oil (no taste) or using MCT oil in replacement to it (though I prefer coconut oil). Glad to hear you’re coming around to it though 🙂

  39. First, thanks for this awesome site! I’ve been making almostBPC for several months, no butter or vanilla. This sounds much better. Just stating week two of keto diet. Already feel better and lost 4 pounds. 🙂 my question is on the coconut oil. Expeller pressed, one said it was virgin(?), some say nothing. I have tried several types, is there really a difference? I always get organic, but not sure if I should look for anything else. Thanks!

    • Expeller pressed coconut oil just has no taste. If you’re not a fan of the taste of coconut, then expeller pressed will be best. Otherwise it doesn’t make too big of a difference 🙂

Glad you’re doing well and feeling better on keto, and thanks for stopping in to make a comment!

  40. Thanks Craig. Now a member. This coffee has made a great difference in my mornings for sure. Thanks for info on the oil as well. I’ve made my BPC this morning with a touch of torani syrup. Only chocolate I’ve had in almost a month. Mmmm!

    • Sounds delicious Tia, I know a lot of people that use Torani syrups in their coffee – I have done it a few times and it definitely adds a whole new flavor dimension to it all – it’s yummy 🙂

  41. I always thought of putting butter into my coffee, since I don’t want to purchase heavy cream. Just one question can you substitute other type of oil for coconut oil, such as canola, olive, or veggie?

    • Kon,

Canola and veggie oil is loaded with processed polyunsaturated fats which are pretty terrible for you. Along with that they’re loaded with omega 6’s. If you don’t like the taste of coconut oil (which has many health benefits, metabolic advantages, and is rather cheap) you could alternatively use MCT Oil. This is a mix of coconut oil and palm oil, but has no taste.

  42. I would love to try this but I am highly allergic to coconut. What would you suggest as a replacement?
    Thank you!

    • For oils, I would just say double up on the butter. Normally I’d suggest MCT Oil but that is made of processed coconut oil. You may need to look up whether or not it can cause allergic reactions for people allergic to coconut 🙂

  43. So I feel like I’m doing something wrong because I really don’t like this recipe. I like my coffee black and adding cream and things to it is just weird. I’ve also tried it with tea (green and irish black) but I still can’t seem to find a way to make this recipe that’s palatable to me. Is there something else that I can do instead of BPC that still fits into the intermittent fasting?

    • Jess,

If you’re doing true IF then you can skip breakfast completely (or just drink a black coffee) and eat in a 2-6 hour window at the end of the night (or whenever you want, really). Some people just won’t like this recipe, but many do. Make sure you’re using grass fed unsalted butter and organic coconut oil (expeller pressed if you don’t like the taste). With that said, if you don’t like cream in your coffee, you probably won’t like the butter (they are similar tastes once mixed together).

  44. Hi, I wanted to know if it is ok for me to add Twin Sweetener to it?

    • I’m not familiar with Twin Sweetener brand. If you check the nutrition information you should easily be able to tell 🙂

  45. First time trying this and…awesome!! It’s like a really good latte from the coffee shop. I added the unsweetened cocoa powder too and just a little sugar in the raw (I’ve gotten to use to having a little sugar in my coffee). Thus will definitely become a normal part oft morning!!

    • Woot! I’m super glad to hear you liked it Tasha! If you’re following keto, though, try to replace the sugar in the raw with a natural sweetener with stevia or erythritol 🙂

  46. Michelle says

Hi what is your take on almond milk I love coffee and yes bpc is amazing sometimes I use clp to make smoothies with almond milk etc but what are your views on it. And where can I get my hands on a complete shopping list?

    • Michelle, what do you mean by a complete shopping list? Almond milk is fine to consume, but the point of BPC is to get fats into your system easily. If you have other alternatives, you don’t really need BPC to be honest (if you don’t want to have it on certain days).

      • Musashi Miyamoto says

Agreed, Craig (though I’m a little late to this discussion!). You can also add butter and coconut oil (doesn’t need to be both of these) a teaspoon at a time to the tea you consume throughout the day.

      • Sandra Lachance says

Just make sure not to drink to much almond milk if you have thyroid problems. It seems it can interfere with the work of your hormones…

        • nadia2664 says

Hi Sandra, I am not sure here it is not the almond that causes thyroid problems but the soya milk, soya is very bad for you, anyone that has thyroid problems should avoid all soya products

          • I think you’re right Nadia! Its the soy not the almonds, almonds have no effect whatsoever on your thyroid gland.

          • Hello, regarding the Soy and hormones. Does anyone have a document or lync to where I can print? I’ve been trying to get my sons to STOP drinking the soy milk. But, because he is actually studying biology he has to have “PROOF” of what I tell him. He says there’s no truth to it and that there’s no research papers proving this. Of course everything I see is not “officially” out there. Please forward ANY information, I really need to make them stop.

  47. Craig, please forgive me in advance – I think I posted this question but can’t find it anywhere my question is can I drink the bulletproof coffee with chocolate peanut butter coconut oil, instead of BPC when intermittent fasting?

    • Gena,

You can I suppose but it takes away the health benefits that BPC has. If you want to just do it as a source of fat, that’s fine. You just need to make sure that it’s worked into your other macros.

The other thing I said when I answered (I can’t find it either, but I remember your question), is that BPC will knock you out of intermittent fasting unless you are doing 12 hours between meals (7am and 7pm for example). So if you want to keep IF truly IF, you shouldn’t bother with BPC. I know I’ve said that’s what I do, but that’s what made me feel best (and people have complained that it confuses them, so I am just clarifying).

      Hope that helps!

      • Thank you so so much! I am glad is asked – I am looking forward to getting back on track! Oh the other question I asked was about the security if the site want to buy the book, but wanna make sure you encrypt?!!

        • Yes, once you are taken to the checkout, it is through PayPal or the Cart System (where you actually enter credit card information and things like that). These pages are completely encrypted and should show you at the left of your URL bar that they have valid SSL certificates. PayPal is one of the worlds largest online transaction takers, so they spend tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars a month to make sure their site is secure.

          Hope that helps!

  48. so i’ve never made Coffee at home and kinda confused with the tools i need to make this coffee..
so searching on Amazon UK what kinda coffee maker am i looking for? (if i wanna make it from fresh beans as well)
best place to get MCT Oil? Amazon or somewhere else?
    what beans should you recommend?

    • You don’t need any special tools to make this coffee. You can make it the regular old way – the machine is just for pure convenience 🙂

I prefer to get my MCT Oil on Amazon – it’s really expensive in other places, and I found it’s the best price there.

As for the coffee beans, you can look for some organic locally sourced coffee – usually in health shops but you can sometimes find them in regular grocery stores. Just keep an eye out for a good quality bean (not super processed) and I think you’ll be good to go!

  49. Just out of curiosity could one use flavored cream instead of the heavy cream?

  50. The BPC recipe that I have been found includes a raw egg… which by the way, is undetectable in the taste… is this recipe incorrect? How does this affect the efficacy and should I continue without it? One more question, how many times a week can you drink BPC?

    • Hey Lynette,

You can add an egg to your BPC if you’d like to. Some people don’t like the thicker consistency it adds and normally I don’t really like to consume raw eggs if I can avoid it. As for how many times you can drink it – it’s up to you. BPC isn’t that nutrient dense, so you have to make sure you make up for your micronutrients and macros elsewhere. If you can do that, you can drink it 7 days a week if you’d like 🙂

    • I have added egg yolks to my BPC for quite a while now, and find it delicious! It foams up more, is creamier and is more filling for me. It did take me a while to get over the ‘ick’ factor of adding egg yolk to hot coffee but was worth it. If you are concerned with any bacterial implication of adding raw egg to coffee, then you can use pasteurised eggs. Personally I have never had a problem with adding any sort of egg to BPC. I have also tried BPC with the egg whites, but didn’t enjoy it as much as with the yolks only. (Maybe just personal preference?) Anyway, enjoy!
