Blackberry Chocolate Shake

Keto Recipes > Keto Breakfast Recipes

You know those chocolate covered berries you find in those specialty candy stores, or the ones that they serve up to you when you go out for a romantic date at a fondue joint? This is a smoothie that will bring memories back to you with a cooling and refreshing vibe running through it.

We all need a break from the ordinary, piping hot ketoproof coffee every once in a while (especially with the weather lately in Florida). Instead of getting your MCT Oil in Ketoproof Coffee, why not change it up a little and grab some MCTs from a smoothie?

You can use almond milk or any other type of milk (even heavy cream if you want), but I prefer coconut milk. It’s slightly thick, it’s delicious, and it’s just the perfect consistency for the final shake. You can drink it for breakfast, or it can be used as a mid-morning snack, after work/school relaxation shake, or a pre-workout supplement.

So what’s your favorite shake to make? Let us know in the comments below!

Yields 1 Serving of Blackberry Chocolate Shake

The Preparation

  • 7 large ice cubes

  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened dark cocoa powder
  • 12 drops liquid stevia
  • 1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum

  1. Made this and it came out great. What a great way to be healthy and still feel like you’re “cheating”. Thanks Craig!

  2. Can I use raspberries?

  3. Hi
What can I substitute the Stevia with?
Also, have just come into spring in Australia. Would frozen berries works with this?
Looks delicious and I cannot wait for fresh berries.

    • Frozen berries would work – but as for Stevia, it’s pretty commonly used in low carb cooking. You can sub any sweetener you want, but just keep in mind that Stevia is ~600 times stronger than sugar, so you might need to have a few teaspoons worth of your sweetener if you are using a granulated type.

  4. Can I use coconut oil instead of MCT oil?

    • Rudy, supposedly if you melt the coconut oil first, then you can. But I’m not too sure about that. When I tried coconut oil, it just gave me little bits floating around.

  5. Hi Craig
Firstly I have to say a BIG thank you – your blog is a massive inspiration to me and I love your recipes

Awesome recipe! Do you create all of these yourself?

  7. Hello! I was wondering if I can substitute ground chia for the gum? I’m finding this diet a tad expensive; I bought lots of new and great ingredients but don’t want to splurge on any more unless they’re irreplaceable….I already have chia! Thanks so much.

  8. Roger Dunn says

    Is the xantham gum important?

    • It acts as a thickener in the shake, so I’d say it’s pretty important. If you do it without, you may end up with a more liquid-like shake than anything. It’s still possible to do without the xanthan gum, though.

    • There is a natural thickener in Cream Cheese, maybe sub 1 tablespoon of that, noting carbs added.
Do NOT use Cornstarch! GarGum could be used in cold things, but Xanthum Gum works better in HOT than GarGum.

  9. Susan Stone says

This is a nice shake, although, while I understand what the xanthan gum does, that made it a little weird. I will definitely make this again. One of the real positives of the amount of blackberries is that you barely know there are any seeds there. In other things I’ve done (non-keto) with blackberries, the seeds are obnoxious.

    • Thanks for the feedback, Susan! If you’re still not a fan of the xanthan gum, you can also try using 1-2 tablespoons of gelatin to thicken it up instead.

And I agree with you regarding the blackberries — This recipe has the perfect amount for some added flavor without too many seeds coming along for the ride.
