Growing up as a kid, I had my fair share of fast food takeout. Some of them I still miss to this day and try to recreate (a lot of the time in failure, but don’t tell anyone). One of them that I was thinking about lately? McDonald’s Strawberry Milkshake. Their disgustingly sweet syrup mixed into ice cream and served up to me in the nostalgic paper cup. Not the most beautiful thing to remember from my childhood, but it certainly holds something dear in my heart.
Well, I think I’ve done it because this one comes pretty close to the real thing! It’s thick, creamy, and packed full of that strawberry flavor that I’ve come to know and love with milkshakes. Plus, you can have it ready in a shorter time than it’d take you to wait in a drive-thru. On top of that, it’s not 90g of carbs like their recipe is – and it’s got plenty of healthy fats to go around and keep you energized.
I’ve been on a little bit of a milkshake/smoothie stint lately, so if you want to check out the other one’s that I’ve posted you can see them below:

I haven’t been able to tolerate MCT oil (even 1 teaspoon) very well. I would love to make this with coconut oil, but the ice will freeze it into teeny bits. Any advice for avoiding the freezing of the oil? Thank you!
Megan, you could probably forgo using the oil completely and just drink it like that.
Thanks 🙂 I love using smoothies as a vessel for more fat and have to skip the ice when adding coconut oil. I was hoping you had a special secret, haha.
Karla just said that if you melt the coconut oil prior to putting it in, it will work fine. I’ve tried something similar in the past with no luck – but it might be worth checking out 🙂
Is there a “healthy” keto/lc alternative (stevia, xylitol/erythritol), to the Torani sugar free syrup (splenda/sucralose=>neurological dysfunction etc)? Thanks!
Monica, I have no doubt you could use strawberry extract and stevia.
That is super encouraging to hear. I just filled my Amazon cart with all sorts of extracts to do exactly that. Thanks so much for All you do.
Sure thing Monica – hope you enjoy! 🙂
If using extract and stevia what measurements do you recommend? I’m still waiting on a shipment of Torani Syrup I ordered. 🙁
Jenni,
I don’t really know. normally 12-15 drops for Stevia and 1 – 1 1/2 tsp. extract. But it depends on your own personal flavor preference, strength of the extract, and what type of extract you’re using.
Megan, I had the same concern and it is strange – if you melt your coconut oil, add to smoothie and blend, it does NOT freeze or solidify again. I know, strange, but true …
Interesting, Karla. I have tried similarly and not had luck but I will definitely try again. Thanks for the tip!
Sorry for the late reply! I tried this with strawberry stevia (approx 15 drops) and liquid coconut oil (I didn’t have to melt it, it was already liquid in my cabinet). I blend everything but the CO first, then poured in the CO at the end. It was a great strawberry milkshake 🙂
Glad it turned out Megan – sounds like it was tasty! 🙂
I will try that and report back :)!
Sounds great – let me know if it worked for you 🙂
Made it for breakfast! Raspberry syrup as that what the store had on hand! Yummy!!! I added chia seeds as I bought them months ago and have been afraid to try them!! Lol thanks for insperstion!
Sounds great Brooke – glad you enjoyed and adapted!
This might be a stupid question but what type of Coconut Milk are you using. Is it the stuff found in the refrigerated section with the other milks?
Chuck,
I’m using the “So Delicious” brand of coconut milk. It must be unsweetened (comes in a green and white container). You can find other substitutes and quite possibly could use almond milk here, too. But yes, I find it by all the other milk products.
I made this today. I didn’t have any of the strawberry syrup so I substituted the ice cubes and syrup with some fresh strawberries that I picked and had frozen this summer. It was tasty 🙂
Sounds great Angela – just remember to keep in mind the carb count of regular strawberries. They can add up quick. Glad you enjoyed!
